You never know, Rich, but it does seem almost dead on A.S. now. Matt still posts and replies and occasionally the likes of Simplygraham, Vulcanman, Bikerbob and 1-2 other peeps, incl Brenski, but really, it's a far cry from one time when you'd have at least half a dozen to a dozen plus people regularly having a natter/exchange of views but these days... It's a shame but there you go. It is as it is, mate and here's hoping we can source you a decent working 1050. Feebay examples at mo: Gawd, there are very few and they're often listed with ridiculous prices and shipping rates! I bought my C128 from that guy. He’s a decent chap as he gave me a partial refund when it turned out one of the two CIA chips was defective. Is a Boot Error down to misaligned heads or something more serious?
It can be a few things Richie, dirty head being the most normal but the end stop detector can go bad, shit on the rails, the little spring on the head going fault forcing the head to be too near the disk or too far (its one of those, never remember which) Oh and the little bit of sponge on the top part of the head coming off causing the disk to get scratched (not mechanical I know but worth knowing..
There are lots of pointers on A.S. and of course A.A. Rich to these boot error messages. Paul's run down there covers just about all the main bases. Thark has fixed a lot of these errors before.
Missed one, the weird one, again, not mechanical.. The disk sleeve sticking the disk so it can't spin from being sat in the same place for so long...I always make a habit along the lines of the pencil or pen with the cassette tape, I grab the disk right at the centre and spin it in the sleeve gently before using it.. The second the disk reads get it digitally archived as so many of my disks are full of bad sectors.. Some people even take the disk out of the sleeve and give them a light wash, never gone that far myself.
