Hi, folks. Just spotted a retro techno image that immediately took me back to the late 1980s (I'd roughly guess at 1989 for me) and this shot of an Atari ST. Just thought I'd start a thread whereby if you spot a micro shot from the old days which somehow totally encompasses "the feel" of the era, then why not post it up here with a short comment as to what it is that the image does/says to you. I never had the additional floppy drive or even a 1040STFM model (just the plain old common or garden 520STFM for me), but it will always remind me of some pretty cool demos, 1-2 decent games such as Carrier Command and a bit of desk top publishing on Fleet Street Publisher. This particular image probably reminds me more of a brochure that Klyde/Manu sent me only about a year or so ago which also has some pretty vibrant colours illuminating the product in an attractive way. It never grabbed me, the ST, but I know for some it was a great "power for the price" introduction to 16bit computing so it's nice remembering a machine that is still touted as a fine MIDI music sampling micro.
It takes me back to the computer shows with all the machines on stands demoing some utility, in my case Amiga stuff but obviously there was ST gear about. All the stands had that sort of look, very Tron like with the grids everywhere, that and the ladies with BIG hair Sort of reminds me of the System 3 stand where they had the soon to be banned dancing girls whose costumes were VERY revealing, we stood there salivating at these very sexy ladies, well all of us bar one chubby teen who clearly was more interested with the Twister game screens on one of the computers, he looked annoyed that these women were in his way... Me, I just stood there trung to hide my excitement, if you get the drift...And from what little I remember about the stand was that it was all grids like your photo...
Yes, sexy ladies and Tron-like light cycle grids were always gonna be an attractive proposition to us computer geeks, Paul. Good call. Errr... I think I got that right, Paul?!?
Those scantily clad women in your posted picture remind me too much of old photos of grandma to get me excited! But I do remember some provocative photos between the covers of some late 80's and early 90's video game rags! That ST ad screams '85+ style and sensibilities in aesthetics though. Like Max Headroom, circa '87/88. Which both, of course, borrowed from early '80's films like Tron. Of course good-old Max isn't looking so "new-age" these days...
LOL! Spot on again, Matt. Some good references to more style icons of the era there. Someone will have to supply some snaps of these scantily clad ladies as all my Google-eyed searches are throwing up are lovely ladies like these:
Good old Matt Frewer (if mem serves me right) the Canadian actor who was Max has not aged well Saw Christopher Lloyd aka Doc Brown from Back to the Future in a new film called Nobody (great OTT action flick) and he's looking like he's about to kick the bucket (I hope he doesn't). The ladies at the show were anything but respectable and we loved it (apart from the fat bloke). Great era tho, consoles were getting better, computers the same and some quality 80s music....And the films
Myself and a couple of pals went to a trade show down in London back in 1997. One of them got into real trouble with his girlfriend for having his picture taken with a very shapely Lara Croft lookalike
Deffo rule of thumb back then was don't bring your partner... I was not the sort to go for pics with the ladies as I don't like pics of me but there was deffo the opportunity to put your arm around some very pretty ladies that would make the missus hot under the collar. I hark back to the lady dancers on System 3, all wearing thongs and you could on some see their er undercarriage, flaptastic as Smashy would say.... Small wonder they were banned (sadly)
Chicks for geeks always existed it seems... When I was looking for the pictures above, I came across some things that would not be allowed today, and I also wonder how it could have been published in a computer magazine read by teens and kids back in the days. I remember Oric guru Steve Marshall sending over a pic once on Atari Sector of a very hot young thing holding on to an Oric... but you would do, wouldn't you?! Paul/Rich/Graham/Al, isn't that Linda Lusardi? Now she knew i bit about curves and arsethetics... I'll get me coat.
Was just about to say its Linda, 99.9% sure.. She used to come up to Walthamstow Market with Maria Whittaker, now that's a proper 3 some..Also used to see Maria at the hairdressers in Hammersmith, was too shy to ask for a picture....Wimp.....Cindy would have killed me though...
