    OK, guys.

    Standby your beds/bids.

I'm offering this up on here first as I told my mate John that his beloved old (and boxed) ATARI 600XL might well find an appreciative home on our forum at the right price - the reason being is that he has unearthed it out his garage hoping to raise a few bob to send his young student daughter on a trip to the far east (Thailand/Phuket etc - I said Phuket, Paul not Fek it... never mind), as she's at that stage in life where she wants to spread her wings and experience a bit of the more exotic parts of this world with her college chums... however, she's on a bit of a budget and although John and his missus have given her some spending money, a bit more from the sale of his old childhood Atari 600XL set-up would go a little way in giving her funds a well-timed wee boost.

Here we go - this is what John unearthed when we went to see him and his missus this weekend:

I've looked on Feebay and most boxed specimens are up for north of £200, ie. £250, £300 etc.

    Eg.

    upload_2024-4-28_23-10-14.png

John will take an offer in the £200 region.

    Further info:

I can tell you now that the ingot power supply is dead.

I've rigged up a little mobile phone charger solution and we have a red light lit - I WILL FULLY TEST TOMORROW, FOLKS.

Please note that I have not had chance yet to connect this little beauty to a monitor so who knows... we might yet have memory / chip fault(s) on our hands which will naturally affect the asking price.

Any road, if anyone is at all interested in this little beauty - quite a rarity in its fairly complete condition with boxed 1010 too as well as manuals/brochures/polys in good nick and carton in decent condition (looks like the pause key on the 1010 is dicky but I will test the unit out and see if it loads games... comes with Eastern Front cassette in the old APX livery label), then would you kindly PM me with your best offer.

No worries if you want to hold off for now to await the full testing - I completely understand.

Any road, if no one here fancies it then I will list on Feebay so that it goes for current market value and we get a good outcome for John's daughter.

Reet, thanks for reading and enjoy your retro computing, guys.

Finally, I will send this UK post (sorry, I cannot afford and don't want to send this anywhere else - apols but it's the damn post-Brexit custom forms) for FREE - ie. I will take that expense so that we get the max amount to John's daughter and so you will hopefully get an even better bargain for this much sought-after example of Atari classic computing.

Best of luck to John and his daughter, certainly a fantastic experience for her, just tell her to keep safe. As for John's Atari, it's not for me, I'm afraid. I like some others I am shedding gear myself, but it's got to be up someone's alley and for a brill cause.

I would have been tempted a couple of months ago but not now sadly. I'm trying to raise some money myself. I've even put my massive N64 collection on feeBay. It will sell on eBay for £200 easily as it's all boxed.

If I hadn't just got a Saturn and a little handheld thingy (you'll see that tomorrow Andy) I may have been up for this. Nice to see it all boxed up. But if you find a shiny Oric Atmos or Amstrad CPC under the patio bring it to Brid' with you!

LOL! I was "banking" on you coming down with the Glasgow crown jewels and buying out my Atari, Oric, ZX81, Speccy, C-64 and Amstrad Hi-Fi collection, Al :)

    upload_2024-4-29_22-6-29.jpeg

(The latter doesn't exist - just a fig biscuit of my bizarre imagination)

OK, I don't blame any of you fellas right now not making offers as times are tight and we have all had it very good for a good long while and from time to time folks either "trim the heard" or "prune the bush" (oooerrr) or "chop off yer vitals" - whatever you wanna call it, when we downsize our retro collection in order to put a few quid back in the coffers and maybe take stock of the stuff we've got and sieve out the essentials from the... not so essentials etc

Reet, for the record, the 600XL was booted up toneet and we got all these positive outcomes, fellas:

    upload_2024-4-29_22-10-21.png

RAM chips check out - all good.

    upload_2024-4-29_22-10-46.png

Free memory for BASIC looks... low but what you'd expect for a 16K machine.

    upload_2024-4-29_22-11-12.png

The Eastern Front war strategy game tape (and thus the 1010) loads fine 1st time of asking so nothing wrong there either.

    upload_2024-4-29_22-14-10.png

Had a quick waggle of the joystick too - just for play-testing purposes, you understand - and carts such as ET and Jumbo Jet Pilot play fine too... this baby is AOK and the keyboard gives a nice spring and feels of solid build quality. It's definitely all singing, all dancing and will give some new owner an excellent buzz if this is your bag - as you know the 600XL can be very nicely expanded yet still retains that smaller, slimmer footprint than it's larger 800XL brother and for some this can be important.

Summary - very pleasing in the end (that the original ingot PSU didn't fry the machine when it died) and I will list this Atari classic on Feebay in the next week or so as I'm just waiting now for another one of their reduced listing sale offers to come along which they have been promoting quite a lot of late and so you end up with more money in your pocket...and less in theirs... no bad thing.

If anyone does get 2nd thoughts or knows of someone who will have this then do not hesitate to let me know and likewise I will update you guys on when it does get listed and how the auction goes.

Cheers for your time and replies, fellow Atarians.

I'd make an offer Andy, but wouldn't want to insult John. The 600XL would only be worth £100 to me as that's what my mate Allan is selling an unboxed one with psu for. Sorry mate.

Now that Amstrad Hi-Fi... if only. My first cd hifi was an Amstrad and it blew my mind (and ears). Good times indeed.

I reckon £200 should be achievable on eBay though, especially if you manage to include a power supply.

I'm impressed the 1010 loads first time. I have yet to get my XC12 to load any tape no matter how many times I try and adjust the Azimuth.

We have another update from John as interest on this machine, and I'm very surprised, has been as low as just ONE guy who is trying to knock us down to £150 which we think is a bit cheap.

Probably cos it's summer, retro folks minds (and wallets) are elsewhere.

John will now take £160 for this beauty - last reduction, fellas, and then I'll stick it away and try and flog it for him again around Xmas.

    Cheers & all the best.

If John doesn't need the cash urgent I think that would be a good move to keep in till later in the year when 'normal' people (i.e. not us guys) are looking to maybe make a purchase.
