Hi guys So I just picked up a lovely little 600XL having wanted one for years. However, I didn't realise that it wouldn't be as simple as plugging in Sys-Check to make use of the extended memory (all to do with the 16k base memory of the 600XL). Anyways, if anyone has a nice 130XE that they want to swap for a very recently refurbed 600XL and are based in the UK, please get in touch with me. Happy to just swap the base unit and no power supplies etc to keep weight down in any parcel. Thanks Allen
They can be internally upgraded so the syscheck can work. Never done one myself, maybe Richie might know. My only 130XE needs a repair and when I retrobrighted the case I got a weird rippling colour, basically it's not in good shape to swap of sell. Best of luck Al...
Thanks Paul. I might get the internal upgrade done. To be honest, I'm in two minds about it. It was a 'grail' machine for me but now I have it, it just blends in a bit too much with my two 800XL's. The mad thing is, I sold my 130XE last year and now want another lol
Al, just looked at the way it's done and its really easy for anyone who has soldered stuff, I'm sure if Richie is up to it he could do it in 10 mins and the needed mem chips are really cheap still (around a fiver, possibly less per chip). I would offer to do it, but my spine issue is causing my hands to sometimes spasm, which if you are soldering isn't good It's rare they spasm, but with my luck it would be when I'm doing a machine.. There's even a board to go up to 512 that costs 79.00Polish, and again its a piece of pee to do, Keep the 600XL and get a mod done, you have the syscheck so just the 16K base upgrade is both cheap and easy..
Wishing you lots of luck with that, Al. I'd go with Paul's recommendations - a lovely 600XL with memory upgrade will make an even more sellable proposition in the future when it does come time to pass her on and they are such a small footprint - very very much in demand!
I think I may have found someone local who can do a memory upgrade on the 600XL. Will probably get that while I decide what to do long term with it. Had a poke around my friends shop when I was down collecting the XL. He seems to be getting a lot more 8bit machines in at the moment. Spotted a Vic 20, couple of C64's, Texas Ti994a. He's got some C16's and a Plus4 also being refurbed at the moment. Not to mention boxed 2600's and Jaguars, a screen modded Lynx and many more! When finances affored, I'm getting a Japanese Sega Saturn from him so I can play some of my favourite racing games again (Power Drift, Outrun, Chase HQ, Manx TT).
Brill, Al. Sounds like this guy could provide you with retro goodies for many Christmases to come! I've just got up to sell my 1200XL to some guy who was meant to be driving up from Oxford this morning for an early morn purchase on a Sunday, hence I set me alarm for 0730. Only prob is, he aint now as he's changed his mind and can't be assed. gRRR!
So annoying when that happens Andy. Any other potential buyers still lined up? On the plus side, you can now prepare a lovely breakfast in bed for Bev. Then she can spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what you are trying to apologise for
Mean to say Andy. I'm booked up for a week down Filey way in June next year. Might finally manage a meet up with you!
Hi, Al. My mate's just booked into some digs in Filey next weekend - it's a great little holiday destination as you probably well know. Yep, we must get a meet up finally arranged and June should be sweet. There are 4-5 people buzzing around the 1200XL. The problem is they either live in Sweden, USA or Devon, Oxford and Manchester - none of them on my doorstep. 2-3 have said they will come and then pulled out (I even offered to meet the Manchester guy halfway). It's my decision but I'm just so loathe to posting it - I just know something crap will happen and I'm not gonna risk it. If folks want it THAT MUCH (and several have said that they would flog their sister/gran for it), then they will come... eventually! I'm just hoping it's sooner rather than later as my overdraft has once again reached daft proportions (the two Oric sales staved off the immediate alarm but now it's pushing £500 o/d again.... yikes). Cheers for asking - have now improved the value for money on it by also throwing in a hard to find Atari 1200XL brochure/pamphlet I've found and will next throw in, if I have to, a 1010 etc. Have a super Sunday, fellas.
Filey is a bit like stepping back in time I love the North Yorkshire coast in general, so many great little towns and gorgeous views. Hope you get the 1200XL sold soon Andy to help clear off that overdraft. I think it's already a bargain at the kind of money you are looking for. Wish I had the cash! Although I've just bought a full range of Amiga's. Well, when I say full range I mean in emulation. Got a great "early Cyber Monday" deal from Cloanto for the very latest versions of Amiga and C64 Forever that just got released last week. Was only £9.99 which seemed a bit of a bargain. If anyone want's the link here it is https://www.amigaforever.com/special/9g/
Yeah, I know what you mean about Filey being a bit "lost in time" and feels like it's still in the 1950s-1960s which makes it very quaint and still a very "English seaside town" effect rather than a more modern (brash even?) Blackpool which can suffer from too many... lights, stags/hens and overloud people. Anyone up for Blackpool? Nah, yer alright. Filey's fine. I think the 1200XLs priced about right, Al, but it's getting those punters through to Hull which is the big problem as Hull is stuck out at the arse end of nowhere... I'll keep tempting em if I have to as I must plug that overdraft else I'm in deep shite. Those Amigan emulation deals sound fabtastic. I'm sure you won't be the only retro punter taking advantage of those cool cyber Monday prices, mate - priced to fly out the door, for sures. Cheers, buddy. Have a good week ahead, fellas... and check those letter boxes - something micro retro afoot here in Satan's, I mean Santa's mailing dept...
It's lovely that you can go to places like Filey and actually relax for a couple of days. I like a good wander along the Brig and through the gardens above the Promenade. I booked the Haven Blue Dolphin site Nice caravan for only £69 Monday to Friday. Can't beat that Had a week for May down at Great Yarmouth as well, but I've moved that to Bognor Regis so I can go through and visit Portsmouth (many a childhood summer spent at relatives) and visit the likes of Brighton and the Isle of Wight. Maybe a trip to Beauliu (sic) Motor Museum as well and a little retro excursion on the way home to the RMC location Here's another sweetener for the 1200XL Andy. Why don't you include Bev's excercise bike? No?.....
Hehe - now you know that would only make sense if I owned a bullet-proof vest, a titanium crash helmet and a riot shield, Al! As you say, the traditional English seaside holiday beats the pants off some loud theme event in my book (though there's nowt wrong with the other if you've got a family/brood in tow!). I prefer the simpler pleasures too like a stroll along cliffs, promenade and the Filey Brigg is a bit like at Flamborough where the headland stretches right out and there are rock pools to explore when the tide goes out - brilliant memories revisited of when we had those carefree summers back in 76,77 and through the early 80s etc when all that mattered was getting out of school for a bit of sun and fun with your mates and maybe saving up yer pocket money for a new games cassette for your 8bit! Portsmouth and the "beautiful south" eg. Beaulieu (?), Kent, Bournemouth and the likes of Torquay / Cornwall are all very nice destinations too, Al. I am sure you will have a top time touring, mate. Great price for the Blue Dolphin caravan park too - excellent value, bud.
