This weeks retro finds guys. Clockwise from top left we have Ambernic RG35XX SP - I've been wanting a modded Gameboy SP for a while but couldn't justify the cost. For half the price this makes a great alterntive. It looks feels and plays better just like the SP but with the added benefits of emulating lots of other systems with RetroArch. USED 3.5" FLOPPY DISKS - picked up by a mate at a car boot sale. I had a rummage through and came back with a handful. Some are labelled from a games shop I worked in 35 years ago and a couple of others are software on demand titles from WH Smith/John Menzies that I've never seen before. The most interesting though is one that simply says "ST List". I'm hoping this might actually be a list of games from back in the days of the infamous Barras Market. Will need to check it out soon. WOODED DISK COASTERS - custom made by said mate from above. Ideal for refereshment placement in the Al Cave. He also sells them in four packs like this for £10 posted. USB FLOPPY DRIVE - another carboot find. Going to try and use this to load Amiga and maybe ST games right into some of the emulators available on the PC.
Lovely lot there, Al. Fingers crossed that that disk contains the "long lost lists" indeed of your ST formative years, mate... Keep us updated, pal.
How much of Showaddywaddy is original members? As for Best Electronics, be warned, Bradley, the owner, is a bit of a Marmite guy. He can be right helpful one day and starts complaining about what and how many you are ordering from him. Met him once a long time ago, he came over from the states for the PCW show, tried to get a free catalogue off him, but he wasn't having any of that Also, the last time I heard, he had a minimum order limit of 20 dollars (I think), probably more now. Lastly, be grateful Chris linked you direct to the ribbons, Brads site is just a MESS, and he refuses to bring it into this century
The only original member now is the drummer, been with the band since they started in 1974. BEST's website is an absolute riot and I've heard of Brad's 'unique' sales technique.
I have about 100 floppy disks in two boxes I bought off feeBay a few years ago. Cannot use them currently as I have no working floppy drives and I’m relying on Goteks. No idea what’s on them, never really looked. I had them for my Acorn ADFS and SEDORIC which I don’t have anymore. I should dig them out and check.
Still not had a chance to try the usb drive with any of the emulators but I will eventually. In the meantime found an old disk catalogue of mine for the Amiga in amongst a pile of Workbench discs so that give me something extra to aim for!
My latest buy is a SAROO Cart for my Sega Saturn, plays EU,US & JAP ISO files, emulates 1M and 4M RAM Carts and emulates the Saturn memory and also a Backup cart. All in one Cart. I can literally play every Saturn game available without stressing it's CD drive. It's is a game changer as Saturn games are getting quite expensive these days.
It's great isn't it Richie? Cracking price as well. Very chuffed with mine, loading times are crazy good! Any particular Saturn favourites?
Well where do I start LOL I had a Saturn for most of the 32 Bit era so I had plenty of games. Everything by Lobotomy - Exhumed,Duke Nukem and Quake Shining the Holy Ark Alien Trilogy Sega Rally Nights into Dreams Tomb Raider Tempest 2000 I never got to play the Japanese games back then so I was playing Metal Slug today.
I also bought a RetroBit Sega Saturn 2.4Ghz Pro Controller last week as well. It can play as a standard controller or switch to the analog controller. The only downside is it’s not playing well with the SAROO and I haven’t been able to update the controller firmware. So it’s only being used for disc based games currently.
I got the Saturn mainly for racing games - Outrun, Daytona, Manx TT, Power Drift, Chase HQ. Other games I enjoy on it are Rampage, Tetris and Die Hard. My mate with the shop is right into Japanese Shmups but I've never been a big fan of anything more advanced than Galaga. That's strange with the RetroBit, hope they sort it soon. Thinking of getting one of their pads for using with the Ambernic as just found out it has bluetooth built in. That's another system I'd recommend for someone like yourself Richie, fast becoming a favourite of mine.
I used to have the Video CD card for my Saturn back then but they cost a fortune to pick one up nowadays. That's one thing the Playstation does better, playback of FMV is a lot better. The Saturn wipes the floor with the PS1 when it comes to 2D games like X-Men vs Street Fighter. After I bought the last couple of Saturn games released in the UK, House of the Dead and Deep Fear, it was a bit of a gap until I bought a Dreamcast as soon as it came out. I think I paid £400 in 1998 for a Japanese import Dreamcast. I was so keen to get one I couldn't wait for the UK model. Trying to work out what people were saying in Sonic Adventure The Saturn was my favourite 32 Bit console even though it didn't do as well as I would have liked.
Never had a Saturn, my bro did, but I never borrowed it. I think I was a bit Sega blinded at the time, I wasn't a fan of any of the Sega series until I got a Dreamcast. Oddly, it was the sound the Sega series had and nothing to do with the games. To me, the music sounded awful, mind you, my tinnitus didn't help. To my ears, it sounded like a person was dragging nails on a blackboard, ie grating. I liked the look of some Saturn games, like Knights and Panzer Dragoon. Also, Daytona looked ace. Would I own a Saturn, no, the cost and just semi lack of interest means when I do have the very occasional game, I use an emulator. Last game I played on it was some clockwork robot platformer, looked very nice, pretty sure clockwork is in its name.
This is putting me in the mood for some Saturn gaming The PS2 got a bit of a runout yesterday with Outrun Coast 2 Coast and Auto Modellista. My rejigged cave setup is just about complete now so will try and post pictures over the weekend.
You should give it a go under emulation bud. I know physical kit and games these days are getting on for silly money for some games. Deep Fear for example is I think, the last game released for the UK Saturn and didn't get a big release. I bought it at the time but I traded my copy in back in the late 90's ( it's a bit like my mum selling my original vinyl caped Jawa for a Fiver! ) so on Ebay it's on for £400. Is it worth that? absolutely not. The voice acting is abysmal, the cut scenes aren't very good but the idea and game itself are good though. It's Resident Evil meets The Abyss, set on an undersea base infected by a virus brought from outer space.
I really like the Saturn emulator on the PC (Mednafen) but much prefer using the real console on a CRT with the Saroo cart. I got a great deal on a Japanese Saturn a couple of months ago when I heard about the Saroo McRae is good although I'm more of an arcade racer, think Sega Rally. Auto Modellista is a belter of a title if you get the chance to play it Richie. The graphics really are something else. I'd like to add the original boxed version to my PS2 collection but it can be quite expensive nowadays so until I come across a cheap copy it will be the iso image on the Playstation 2 instead
I was looking at Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5 yesterday (video of it) and it looked AMAZING, and it was VR-2, but at 350 - 529 for the VR headset, it's way way out of my range, even as a pay in 3 it's beyond what I can afford. But it still looked stunning. Normally, I am not overly fond of management style games where customizing is a huge part of it, this I liked. Will snag a look at the Auto Mod game. Like you guys, I just look and laugh at game prices now, as Richie says, it might be rare, but the game can be a real crap fest, yet some nutter wants a gazillion quid for it. It only takes one mug, sorry, buyer to pay the huge price and the trend sticks.
Just had a play of Auto Modellista, very drifty in my non expert hands. Nice cell shading graphics. I barely could keep it in a straight line. Not really my thing, but it is very nice, quality Capcom game, was there a follow-up? As a very much younger man, I did the advanced driving course so to get the insurance down. We did all the skid pan stuff, yet, put me on Ridge Racer and I struggle to get the drift right, despite knowing exactly what to do and doing it for real And Ridge Racer is one of the easier drift style games.
Nice Dreamcast set up oop for grabs in Hull, fellas. No idea if this is good value or the guy's going for top dollar but you seem to get quite a bang for yer buck: Dreamcast with games and accessories £200 https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...place_top_picks&referral_story_type=top_picks
That's a nice setup Andy. I do like the Dreamcast a lot and that looks a great starter kit for someone. I was playing Modellista yesterday and you're right Allen it's a great game. I really like the Cell shaded graphics, I used to like that style. Jet Set Radio on the DC was another excellent Cell shaded game. There was one on the Wii which I cannot remember the name of and a game called XIII on the Gamecube and PS2/Xbox
The ultimate Cell game has to be Zelda Windwaker.. I liked XIII, nice stealth / shooter, they brought a remastered version out on the Switch but preferred the old one. Ha ha, Jet Set, was I the only one who felt a little bad when doing the graffiti sections
PS, that Dreamcast bundle is a little overpriced (for me), Even if the Dreamcast itelf was say 70.00 notes, the rest isn't worth 130.00. When I brought my controllers they were 1.00 each from CEX (really) as were the mem card units, same price. It IS a nice little bundle and ideal for a starter, even better if its the firmware that can boot CDR's Only trouble with the CDR's is that the DC drive is 1GB and the CDR's are 700Meg, sommit has to go or be compressed. Normally they could nip out the padding files. Make me laugh, I sometimes struggle remembering names of film stars, but stupid trivia re retro stuff just gushes out as if it was yesterday I'm betting the Wii Cell games is either Madworld or Okami..Bot very striking games. There were quite a few Cell games on the Wii, probably more than 30 I'd guess.
I do like Zelda - Wind Waker, I have the GameCube original and the Wii U HD remake.I also have Madworld for the Wii. I don't have Okami on the Wii but I do have in on the Switch. I am thinking it was called Red Steel. You had a samurai sword ( Wii remote ) and pistol ( Nunchuck ) I think it was by Ubisoft. Prices for Dreamcast's vary a lot these days but I think Shenmue 1 & 2 can be expensive. I would like one in the future but not just yet.
