C'mon, Al, Paul and Matt etc - have a bash, post up yer scores and then have a good laugh when I record my feeble attempt.

Ahem, well it is still PRACTICE sessions, yeah?!

We got til the end of October for the tournament proper - and we need photo verification, aye?

22100 for me on expert level. I found it easier with a gamepad but still really tough!

And there's me thinking we get about a bit - there's no stopping international playboy Al "Nysavant" O'Neill.

Wish I had shares in his air/roadmiles... ;-)

Hey, dusted off my 800XL (256K onboard RAM - I think this will be thanks to Richie - cheers, mate) and joystick and then looked for some XEX / ATR Commando files... all I could find at 1st was a ROM file - nothing doing.

I then booted up what should be the 256K XEX Commando+ version... but it didn't look too good or clever, guys - comments on this one, please:

    upload_2023-9-29_0-12-38.png
    Loading and title screens OK...

    upload_2023-9-29_0-13-51.png

but then once game selected and orf we go...

    upload_2023-9-29_0-14-56.png
We got this distorted graphical mess above.

What's the problem here then fellas - is my 256K not sufficient and it actually needs 320K (or more) for those added extras that Matt mentioned previously?

So, I opted for the other XEX of just the standard Commando I found:

    upload_2023-9-29_0-16-52.png

    upload_2023-9-29_0-17-34.png

All looking mighty good so far... and when starting up the game:

    upload_2023-9-29_0-18-36.png

YaY! That went well too, guys. Much better - how it should be in fact.

So, I just had a play at the beginner level for a couple of goes and my best "training" scores were:

18900, 28700 and then my best 39600 - though I hasten to add I played BEGINNER on Commando (not Commando +) so I need to check with you fellas - the comp, once up and running proper, is for EXPERT level, yeah, and can you play on either Commando+ or Commando - do they both constitute the same game challenge?

    upload_2023-9-29_0-22-4.png

    Just checking!! :)

Am enjoying the flashback when playing this for hours on the Beeb around 1985 - never played on a decent version on the Atari before so this is indeed a pleasure - if you aint had a go yet, do so - you never know, you might surprise yourself and get a reet good retro buzz from booting up this lovely ol classic - GAME ON, Al and Richie - and I know Matt's just waiting in the wings :) Will Manu and maybe Dave also join us - I jolly well hope so - and Cindy will show Paul just how it's done too (whilst he goes and fetches his car back from Loch Ness!!)

I tried to have a go last night, almost instantly my shoulder started moaning at me which drained the fun out of it. I'll see how it goes, don't want to be a spoilsport, but if I'm not enjoying it I have to stop. To be fair, I'm rubbish at Commando anyhow :)

Sorry to hear, Paul. Wish we could wind the body clock back 10-20yrs for you, pal, and take those aches and pains away.

Hey, for anyone who never read issue 2 of Excel magazine (excellent Atari colour fan magazine from about 6-7 years ago edited and published by Robert Stuart: https://excel-retro-mag.co.uk/), here is a great review of Commando (+) which is inspiring me right now (it's raining out so I'm in from the garden jobs), to boot up the old beauty and tackle Al's high of 22,100 on Expert level - watch out, Al, I'm coming for yer! :)

    Agreed, Al.

I think Matt was trying to get in touch with him 2-3 yrs back as I believe he had some articles ready for him to publish in forthcoming issues... but alas it seems to have hit a brick wall and no further contact from Robert (unless Matt has an update on this?)

A great pity as this was a high quality production with some great vibrant content.

I had many a chat with Robert, he sent me his old amiga 1200 with a HD and ram card, needed a wee fix. He almost was to the point of publishing issue 6(?) but personal stuff started to happen which overshadowed every thing. Not spoke to him in ages, I hope he's well and all the stuff is sorted.

I hope one day we see the 'lost' issue, Robert always sent me a free one as he said my little stories about the times inspired him to do the mag, obviously amongst other stuff.

    Ah, what a shame, Paul.
I can imagine you and Rob having a very good rapport as I know you're both passionate retro micro people - esp where the Atari and Amiga are concerned.

So so sorry to hear of his personal issues and it just goes to show that shit happens all the time and more often than not it's others getting an even worse deal than our own particular brown pile of suffering.

Sincerely hope that Rob's situation improves and that he's able to get back in touch with such firm friends and supporters as say you, Matt and many many others who would love to see that "missing" issue finally hit the printers and then our doormats - it's probably the best indie Atari mag that ever saw the light of day for our beloved Atari 8bit classic machines.

Have a good day, Paul and thanks, as ever, for your personal anecdotes - as ever, always an interesting read.

I'm sure Roberts ok, I can't really go into detail as it's his business but if I use the word 'split' you can work it out.

And yeah, the mag was amazingly good, the work in it was just fantastic. The Amiga he sent just came out of the blue, I think it was our second chat and he just said that he had an old 1200 that would not boot, did I want it. 2 days later it was here. So kind of him..
