Atari User magazine...anyone else know of this?

I found the link through Atarimax while I was browsing to see if they had any new gadgets I want...

I've heard plenty of references to Atari User over the last couple of years, but I thought they were referencing the old UK or US magazines, I didn't know there was a "new" one!

I just spent $115 buying all 23 of the back digital issues available. I wanted hard copy, but they force you to buy digital as well, and each issue is anywhere from $13-30 that way, so even with free money from Uncle Sam that's way too much for hard-copy magazines...If anyone is interested in splitting costs with me, I'd be happy to send any or all issues to others. The more who want to do it, the cheaper it will be...I'm downloading them now...

I'll wait a few days and see how many people here are interested then divide cost between us all. Don't feel obligated for my sake though, it's free money for me, easy come, easy go...

Means I'll have three generations of Atari user, sadly not all issues, due to many of them being found in a solid block of waterlogged paper

I had no idea,about the 'New' Atari User so on that score, I've some CD's I purchased, they have good quality (generally) PDF's of the older magazines. Some seem to be much better than those you can download off the ol' internet. So I'll sort them out and add them as resources similar to Tim's collection of magazines.

 

Ok, we'll see if anyone else wants in before I divvy up costs. Yes, Paypal will be fine. I'll PM my address. Do you have sufficient space to accept PDF's on e-mail? They average 10MB and issue it seems, but one is over 100MB and a couple are around 50MB. Otherwise we may need to find another way, maybe I should start a OneDrive account or something and everyone that chips in gets the password or something? Any thoughts about the transfer fellas?

I've got them all downloaded and on my desktop waiting to go out whatever way may be best. I'm really up for suggestions though, if sending them to a Cloud is the way to go, or through e-mail or this site somehow, if anyone knows. Or if anyone already has a Cloud account that could be used for this and just change the password later or something...whatever is best.

If we get 10 people total, that's only $11.50 each for over twenty issues, one of them is a "best of" and one or two others might be special judging by PDF sizes. I haven't looked at any yet, but will start after I post this...But anyone interested just check out the site...

 

I've got them all zipped, one standard .zip and one .7z, they come to 430MB total in the zip.

In regards to delivery I suspect that the best way is to upload them to something like Google drive or Dropbox, both of these offer the ability to share with only peeps you wish, either by a download link, or a shared area and add peeps email addresses (that you'll have via paypal)
The advantage to you Matt is that it's a one time upload, sending 10 emails would be 10 uploads.
note you could also place in a 'public area' but with the zip file encrypted, just email out the password..

I'll look into signing up for dropbox, I guess I need something like this for future use to in similar situations. I do not trust Google and make every attempt I can to avoid them and them getting my info. The only place Google has me anymore is Youtube, otherwise I've got alternatives to them on my PC and my new phone. They especially don't like that I've disabled all their apps on my phone and replaced them with alternatives, as I get pop-up reminders from them constantly that supposedly my phone won't work right without them, even though it does, except for their pop-ups.

 

Nice I've just spent most of the day with my replacement phone trying to drop all the google apps, I've genrally disabled them all ..
Still have an issue with 'upday' as pops up news related crap, but hasn't an entry under apps. doh !! bar stewards.

At this point, with three besides myself, it would be $28.75, or a little more than a dollar per magazine. Hopefully we can get that lower, 5 of us would make it an even $23 each, or $1 per magazine. But we'll wait a couple more days and see who else might be interested. I'll set up a Dropbox today.

 

As a gift to all at Atari Owner's Club and maybe to get more interested...this will be taken down after it all, as I don't know how much space AOC has.

 

Ok, I've got dropbox set-up...finally...the most confusing and convoluted application I've ever had the displeasure to install and get working, but I finally did it!

Very decent of you and I do hope that a few more genuine, like-minded Atari classic fans and indeed Atari Owner members will also chip in, showing their mutual appreciation of what really is brilliant ongoing support of our beloved machines.

The old maxim is true you know, folks - use us or lose us - and the best way of showing your support is actively getting involved a little to show that all important show of commitment.

By the way, interesting that you chose an old issue cover that refers linking the computer with the world outside and shows, not one, but two robot arms connected to an Atari!

 

It's also great to see the full-color, full glossy (I assume the real print version is-at $10 a pop, it better be) magazine, something that I'm not sure has EVER been the case for any Atari magazine, all the way back to the 80's. This is the most professionally done of all (referring to the new editions not what Andy is showing here, no joke), it's even better than EXCEL which I thing was the best before, and unfortunately only for 5 issues...

 

Sadly I'm out, I had the car tax last week and now before the 14th, the car insurance, between that and extra uni costs I'm riding a thin line. There's a slight possibility that Sharon may donate a bit of the 852.00 I got her refunded towards things..Can't rely on that though..

Initially with the crowd funding I was fine but then my daughters lap top died, the Uni needed a 200 quid deposit for one, it was one thing after another both her and there. Thankfully its sort of slowed down and there's just about enough in the pot to fix all but what little spare there is I have to keep safe incase sommit small needs doing..

Always the way, you get some money and then things just come out of the woodwork to take it away...

LOL! I was actually thinking of submitting articles to it, now that EXCEL is gone, and the only other choice is Pro(c) Atari which is now only annual and who knows how much longer it will continue on even that way...I just can't believe Atari User has been around for, apparently, 10-15 years and I didn't have a clue about it! Maybe it was mentioned at some point on AA, but either I skimmed over thinking they were referring to the old Atari User mags or it happened over the few years between 2011 and 2015 when my stuff was all in storage and I was away from the scene.

 

I've got to go read through the PDF for dropbox now, and figure out how to properly share, since Paul has had issues with just signing in as me. Apparently if you don't use the app you have to download and go straight to the site instead, it sends out a verification code. I sent that to Paul once I found out, but for all I know it's temporary and they'll just send out another code...

...okay, apparently I have to go to the website and pick a share option and send a link to people's personal e-mail for others to get the files. So @Paul "Mclaneinc" Irvine , I'll send you a link in a minute.

Ok, well it seems that only @Graham , @Andy Barr , and possibly @nysavant are interested to chip-in, and it may not be enough people for nysavant. So, here is what my final plan is:

This was free government money to me anyway, as they say, easy come, easy go, and I bought them all for $115 with the expectation it was all on me, before I decided to do the chip-in idea. So, if each of you who wants in just send me $25 to my Paypal account matthewbaker50@mail.com and I'll send you the link to your e-mail addresses to download the .zip file with them all. Your e-mails should show with payment, but if you want to give them to me in a PM too, just to make sure, we can get the ball rolling.

Just a quick update I've had to redesign the PIA upgrade for the 800. Are you definatly sticking with Pokey Max as having an issue fitting under casing/keyboard with a convensional stereo board. if O.K you will have to lay down or replace the normally green Cap's used by the POT inputs to Pokey , the ones sat between PIA & Pokey, let me know .. P.S other reason was cost as board went over 100mm length went from $6 to near 30$ for an extra 8mm (for 5) not having that ..
P.S. board will have additional outlets to drive other external addresses so could be a board in the expansion slots next to incognito

 

The redesign sounds good to me. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make the PIA board fit. My choice to go with Pokeymax had nothing to do with issues of piggy-backed Pokeys fitting, it fit fine under the shielding, but purely for Quad Pokey and Covox which 4 real Pokeys and DIY Covox board definitely would not fit in the 800. And for about $60, when Pokeys are costing upwards of $100 apiece now, and whatever a DIY Covox would have cost, it just made much more sense to go with Pokey QUAD + Covox.

I'll take one of the original PIA version too, if available, if it will fit in the 1200XL (shielding has been removed for years)

when you say "(for 5)" do you mean it will be able to hold 5 PIA's?
