I missed this one! But tell me, does owning an Oric make one want to press hot irons against their face with a smile and a wink as their flesh burns? I'm just concerned for you guys...

I have to agree with them Andy, it was a great summation, I almost felt as if I was there (and when I say "there" I mean on that beach with Andy, I could care less about the rest of you after seeing those pics!:p), hopefully I'll get my audio/visual input shit together to join you guys soon! And just so you guys know, it was @Graham only that was up to 4am conversing with me, it was merely 10pm here at the time...It was an interesting enough "conversation" that I would have, but that means he, or any of you would have to start posting early morning until 10am to keep me up that late! And it had better start before 6am because that's as late as I usually stay up (your time).:meh:

Only just seen this, my daughter snuck home for the weekend as the morons were driving her mad, so spending as much time with her as possible. Dropping her back later but no clue when at the mo. I'll check the thread for any links when I get back and see how it goes.

I don't know if I will be awake tonight for 8pm - going to have a sleep before watching the Super Bowl. But if I'm up then I'll be on :)

I support a college team (Arkansas Razorbacks) but it's tradition we watch the Super Bowl as well.

Was thinking of shaving what hair I have right down, you might just have changed my mind on that one Paul :)

Ha, it's so thin on top now I'll grow it out once more and then its the close razor all over..Don't like the Prince William look..

Never really been a American Football fan, tried to play the Madden games but like Rugby it failed to appeal. I am not trying to say its like rugby in play, just a little similar :)

The reason I've watched the odd one is that they have all the big film trailers during them....

    Hi Guys
    I've just created a link https://meet.google.com/hrp-xude-rzb
I'll be on at 8:pM and hang around for about 30 mins to see if anyone shows up.

I'm happy to do next week as well, but if Peeps have a prefered time better let us all know.
I'm hoping that David & Klyde will join, and gives Matt a whole week to sort out a webcam for his Fuji-Net based Web exploits. :D

I'm still unsure of when Serena is going and what the traffic is like, if I make it back for then I'll jump on..I think we will be going around 4pm but my daughter has a special super power, the power to miss every deadline going :)

The last journey was 3hrs (there and back) but that involved a huge diversion at The Oval, my cunning plan is to go via the South Circular and hope I miss out on all the traffic..

Sadly most of my cunning plans come off the rails ;)

Enjoy your meet up, fellas, and I'll see you on the next one.

Bev's got me sorting a whole load of stuff out this afternoon and tonight to clear some space for one of those pelaton bikes about to arrive to help her get back to fitness.

It never ends and I know we'll just end up watching telly to relax later so next week's going to be better for me.

As for the Super Bowel - nah, isn't it rugby with body armour, Paul/Al?!

Give me pro-celebrity tiddlywinks or cribbage (on the Oric) anyday!

Each to their own - enjoy it, fellas.

ABOVE: Not everyone was a fan of cribbage on the Oric.

I'm not getting in to that one ;)

These US Football fans take it very seriously and I will not say that without the body amour they are a pile of pansies...

Pelaton bike, oh how very dare you, you'll be only shopping at Waitrose next or have a sign for the houses name with something like "The Barr residence" on...

The league have turned into pansies, not the players. They don't let them hit like the used too. If the '85 Bears were around today they'd be thrown out of the pansy league! But I only watch the Superbowl myself if the Bears make it, which is about once every 20 years or so, so I rarely watch the Super Bowl myself, I just don't give a damn who's playing and who wins if it's not my team. I only watch games for other teams if it impacts the Bears. But Rugby is played a lot differently, the "full contact" isn't quite the same as American football, so there's less need for body armor. The NFL started out a hundred years ago like Rugby, with barely any protection, but after many deaths from broken necks and severe concussions, and crippling for life, they started adding more armor over the years. Of course I don't know the history of Rugby and deaths or maiming, but if there were/are as many as the NFL then and still no body armor, well then that's just plane stupidity. Even the Gladiators of old, who knew death was a certainty for someone, they wore body armor, so were they just a bunch of pansies too?

You see Andy, they take it seriously :)

To be honest Matt, I don't know how many sports still go on, there's so many links to incredibly serious medical conditions. Heading the ball in Soccer as you call it is now being linked to dementia and tumours. Boxing has resulted in so many deaths and delayed damage to the brain. Do I blame people for covering up, hell no, no use being the richest sportsman in the morgue.

As you say, it was much rougher in the 70s and 80s, in boxing the ref would allow much more punishment before stopping a fight, in soccer broken legs were a weekly event from the studs first tackles and things like rugby and US Football were bone crackers.

The only difference is that the Gladiators were expected to kill or be killed as you said, what limited armour they had was almost pointless in the end.

Its a tough one, do we make sport so safe its a bare bones version of what it was?

    Would that lessen the enjoyment?

Personally I don't want to see a person die or suffer serious injury for their sport, there can be tragic accidents but lets not make it so these accidents become as numerous as they were..

Thank goodness we don't have combat snooker :)

Left after 5pm and made great time, dropped her off and when I walk in (just now) my phone bleeps, "I've left my entry card in the card, can you please drop it back"....ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

At least she said sorry about 50 times...

Back in to the bloody car....

While I hate to see injuries and death and other debilitating injuries for life or that catch up in old age, the way I see it is the players chose their careers, going in knowing what can happen, just like jet-fighter pilots, astronauts, bull fighters, mercenaries and career military, police, etc., etc. If you choose a career that is dangerous, that's on you and no one else. I especially feel this way about professional athletes that make more in a year than many third world countries, they and their loved ones are set for life and beyond, unless they blow it all on "blow" or whatever, but that's on them too. So I'm totally against the "pansifying" of sports. Life is dangerous and we all don't make it to a grand old age or even stay healthy enough too do so.

Yeah, I think I got on a bit of a rant there and am going to erase the last couple paragraphs...now that I've slept on it. Too much reasoning and explaining and it went off the rails.
