Arcade Game In Basic On My BBC Micro - You Couldn't Do This In The 80s!

Apols if this thread aint exactly in the best slot but this Beeb hardware enthusiast and programmer is certainly encouraging us all to look seriously at what a modern BBC Micro can do - I mean it always had some serious power under the bonnet even back in the day but with the design philosophy so adaptable and so open to extend its power by adding a second processor (of any type you might fancy), then why not pop on a Pi and really let fly. Here we go then, an exercise in efficient coding and writing a simple arcade type game in BASIC... just see where he goes with this and hopefully enjoy another trip down 80s micro heaven memory lane, albeit now with the modern twist and extra power, fellas...

 

...and if you enjoyed episode one from Pixel Fandango, he then shows you how to really go to town and jazz up everything in your arcade game in terms of variety of attacking aliens, improved colours, sound and rewards etc.

Question is, surely an Atari user could try something similar in Turbo Basic?

The defined procedures and flowcharts/logic are all clearly given as well as the coding so it wouldn't be too tough to recreate for the Atari classic.

Clearly the Beeb has the advantage with the Pi co-processor but you might surprise yourself and produce something of note.

I might well look at this in future, fellas.

...and finally, for now, folks like Richie might already be aware of what you can do with a Beeb (Master) and a Pi co-processor, but just in case, and for the rest of us, let us educate ourselves with this little clip - I'd subscribe to this guy's channel if you have even a passing interest in this subject as it really does transform an 80s classic micro into an absolute power beast able to rub shoulders, compete and possibly beat modern apps and hardware.

What to do with a BBC Master and a Pi Co Processor

 

Nice set of videos. The Beeb always was a damned good computer and although I'm not normally a fan of adding modern co-pro's or accelators to retro hardware this does look really good. The bubble universe demo and shoot em up in the first two video's especially.

Makes me want to play with a Beeb again!
