Sony ending production of physical disks by 2028

So Sony have decided they need even more money and will stop producing games on physical disks in 2028. So it's safe to assume the PS6 will not nor ever have a disc drive.
So they save costs on the console and they lock you into a digital store where the price is dictated by Sony. A game that you could get from Argos for £29.99 on disk still costs £69.99 on the PSN store. Plus games can be delisted, servers shut down and you will loose access to your games. So you don't own the games you buy.
I bought Anthem on Xbox for £50 it was a game that had to log onto the servers to play the single player game. EA shut the servers down so the game has been rendered unplayable. Welcome to the future.
This is why I buy PS4/Xbox One games or PS3 and Gamecube. This PS5/Xbox Series generation will be my last. They can go and get 'effed.

I hate it when this kind of closed shop,we've got you by the nuts attitude becomes the norm business strategy and us the poor consumer have zero choice.
It stinks, mate, and another reason why I still hang on to my retro roots - like you mention, those systems you reference, can still be used whenever we want and our software will never be dependent on these money-grabbing barstewards holding us to ransome.
Gamers should boycott Sony.

Likewise. I can't see me buying any more Sony or Microsoft consoles. Not only because there will be no physical media, but also the price of the hardware and the games in general.

I'm probably a hypocrite on the digital downloads as everything on my Switch is from the Nintendo Shop apart from Atari 50 which I always keep the cartrdige in the Switch for. The difference is I still have a choice with the Switch - it's just I like buying cheap downloads like the Arcade Archives and Sega Ages titles when they are on sale.

Thankfully all the previous generations mean that I'll never be short of titles to play and there is still some great stuff coming out as 8-bit homebrews.

 

Some titles are digital only, like the remakes of Po'ed, Killing Time and Exhumed. So I bought them digitally. I have around 12 Switch games on cartridge. I do prefer to own the game physically on Switch although with the Bioshock Collection you only got Bioshock on the cartridge you had to download Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite off the Nintendo servers. I have a physical copy of Atari 50 as well, although I did buy the expansions online before the expanded edition was released. I only have around 15 Xbox One/Series games on disk currently and around the same for the PS5, but I tend to trade them in or sell them on unless it is a game I will replay. I refuse to buy it digitally if there is a disk version and especially if it has an always online requirement I will avoid it especially after Anthem. Go back a generation and I have 30+ PS3 games and similar for the 360 although I have several digital games for both, this was when it was the idea of digital storefronts getting off the ground. Gamecube and N64 is my largest physical collection but that literally is the era of no digital sales, and everything was physical. There are literally thousands of games out there so if this is the end of the line for new consoles for me I have plenty to keep me occupied.
