Most liked posts in thread: Your absolute favourite game....Ever...(so far)

All nice games, most I was not into but that's the point of the thread, why did you find these games to be so important to you, what rocked your world in them. It's less about naming the games and more about their content. I'm always interested in why people thought x game was soo good, were they swayed by the graphics or did the game play amazing...You get the drift.

As much as we are individuals, there are some games that we all love for the exact same reasons. Is there an essence of games that we could extract to make games that always appeal. Maybe we could BUT would that not be boring after a while, variety as they say, is the spice of life.

As you know, kids of today want it to look photo real as that is what they have been brought up on, BUT when you look at some of their fave games you realise they are just mindless nonsense in a lot of cases, but they have music and gfx they like. As we are older generation gamers, it's nice to see how we get swayed, have we moved away from our origins and ignore the old 'ugly' games, I think not, I still find Jumpman to be a fun time, and lets be honest, it's as basic looking as you can get. I'm not saying new games are just eye candy, of course it's nice to see the evolution of games graphically and sonically, but does the content hold the attention of a more seasoned gamer. Again I think they can, my choice of Zelda ticks so many gameply boxes and manages to wow the eye and ears. And I know it's not just me being wowed, it's such a loved series of games, players young and old.

But there's always time for Spelunker, Seven Cities of Gold, Space Invadeers etc..

 

Kick Off and Sensible Soccer are two of my all time favourites. Mainly because me and my pals spent many evenings and school holidays playing them constantly. It was like Subbuteo on Steroids.

Another one would be Bejewelled 3. I like a 'relaxing' game as I'm not really into adventures or FPS shooters. Again, spent many an hour just having a 'quick' game of Bejewelled.

Special mention too for racing games like Outrun Coast 2 Coast, Ridge Racer and the Burnout series. I just love a good arcade racer be it in the arcades or at home but these ones always keep me coming back. Not really into the simulator type where you fiddle with brakes and tyres. I just like to get in and drive!

And the one game I always make a beeline for in any arcade is Galaga. I love the simplicity, the graphics, sound. Everything about it.

 

So, so, so difficult Paul as I bet we all have at least a top three on at least 3-4 different platforms, from different eras and I don't even know your recommendations... other than Bruce Lee, but I'll bet they're quality and would probably blow my choices out the water in terms of presentation, graphical prowess and depth... but as you say, all that matters is what makes these games special to US, so here goes...

Best games from the early 80s played: FOOTBALL MANAGER, MAZOGS & PSION FLIGHT SIMULATOR (ZX81) - all amazingly addictive
Best game from the mid 80s played: ELITE (BBC) - a universe in 32k... on a tape! Constant galactic trading and space combat for at least 6 months until I became Dangerous! (also BEACH HEAD - C64 - excellent visuals and DROPZONE & BOUNTY BOB STRIKES BACK - Atari 800XL - mega quality Atari goodness absolutely dripping in quality graphics and game play)
Best game from the late 80s played: XENON 2 MEGABLAST (AMIGA) Music and gameplay out of this world for me - the best non-arcade arcade experience!
Best games from the early 90s played: HARPOON, KICK OFF2 & ALIEN BREED (all Amiga) - all kept me hooked for months with their blends of strategy, depth, playability and atmospherics.
Best mid 90s game: DOOM (PC) - Sheer hell on a floppy - incredible 3D horror and gratuitous violence unleashed!
Best late 90s game: RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN (PC) - Great FPS with a very realistic plot
Best early 2000s game: QUAKE 3 ARENA / DEATHMATCH (PC) - Solid out of this world deathmatch action and so smooth and colourful with plenty of different weapons too
Best other 2000s game played: FAR CRY and OPERATION FLASHPOINT - these games had so much depth and suddenly photo-realistic graphics and lush green backdrops - mind, I suddenly found my old 486 couldn't keep pace anymore!!!

Soz, if I've done this reply to death, guys, but once Paul tempted me down memory lane, this little lot came flooding out from the recesses of my 16K memory chips

In my youth I owned three systems (C64, Amiga 500, PC XT clone), so If I can choose three, then:

1. Monkey Island 1 - Amiga (because of the story, the graphics, the humor, the fun)
2. Football Manager 1 - Commodore 64 (it was an Addictive Games and I was addicted to it)
3. Cyrus Chess - PC XT clone (always liked chess, I learned by myself with books, but not many opponents to play with, so many afternoons were spent with me playing chess against Cyrus with a chessboard on my desk. At the time I wasn't used to 2D or 3D graphics display...)

As you can see, I'm not an arcade or console gamer - although I always liked action games...

I remember you being long into your chess and strategy games etc - totally agree with you on Kevin Tom's original FOOTBALL MANAGER by Addictive Games - such an important game in the history of computer video games strategy and sports sims - the original and the BEST!

I've just remembered I've missed an important personal fave of mine from early 90s...

Brilliant - Amiga - two player human future sports action head to head or take on the Amiga - great great gameplay and superb sonics - so funny to hear the voice in the background, amongst the crowd cheers and hoots, shout ICE CREAM!! Hilarious... you had to be there though

 

They all sound like humdingers, Al, and I'm with you ALL THE WAY with GALAGA and KICK OFF2!

Get em on, this weekend, I say!
